How to join a Zoom meeting

Zoom meetings

Zoom is a video chat tool that is increasingly popular for chatting with friends and family and attending meetings – all online! It’s free and easy to use in a web browser or as an app on your smartphone.

The easiest way to join a Zoom meeting is to get an email invitation from the Meeting Host.  Then, simply click the “Join Zoom Meeting” link found in the email you received.

If it’s your first time to join a Zoom meeting, you will be prompted to download the Zoom software.  (You may have to click on the link again in the email to connect to the meeting, once you have installed the Zoom software.)

Free Zoom Account

Zoom will prompt you to set up a free Zoom account. You can join a meeting from your browser without an account. If you create an account, you will be able to host your own video meetings. (Group video meetings are limited to 40 minutes on free accounts, but one-on-one meetings are unlimited.)

Helpful Tips
  • You can join a Zoom meeting with or without turning your video camera on. However, leaving your camera on encourages a sense of community and allows others to see you.
  • Zoom should give you the option to turn on your camera and mic right when you log onto a meeting. If it doesn’t, use the buttons at the bottom left corner of the toolbar to turn on your camera and your microphone.
  • Lights…Camera…Action. Pay attention to your background. If you have too much light behind you, you appear to be only a dark figure. To counteract back lighting, make sure you have a good source of light in front of you and behind the camera that you are using with your computer.
